1st Annual Flyfishing Fun Tournament

I received a call from a good friend of mine, Gene Acquilini, inviting the Pieroway crew out for a fun tournament on Saturday July 10th on the Bow River. The plan was to get as many boats and guys out as we could, put in at McKinnon Flats, spend the day drifting to Carseland, and spend the night at the campground. Gene had his team all set and ready, and I was joined by good friend Nate Byce in my boat.

We arrived at McKinnon around 8:30 AM, geared up, agreed on the rules, chose team names, and launched. Since there were only 2 of us in our boat, we were already handicapped (but not worried). For drawing the short straw, Nate would be on the oars first and I would get to fish one of the best runs on the Bow being the downstream stretch from McKinnon Flats. We agreed that after each fish landed, we would switch positions and the rower would then fish, and vice versa. Before we made the first bend in the river, I had hooked up and lost 3 nice rainbows. Adding to the frustration was the fact we could hear a lot of cheering and hollering from the other boat, leading us to believe we were behind already.

Then, our luck changed. I hooked into (and landed) a nice 15 inch rainbow, then it was Nate’s turn to fish. This swapping of the rowing chair continued most of the day, as the action was almost non stop. We had figured out what the fish were liking, and where they were holding. Then, it happened. As we rounded a bend in the river, we hugged tight to the outside bank as Nate tied into a fish. He assured me this was a good fish and I rowed frantically to get to the slack water so I could anchor and ready the net. A few minutes later, we had a 20+ inch Brown trout landed, measured, and photographed. A quick high-five and I told Nate to row us back into that run. As we drifted back over to the bend, I dropped my fly in the water and prepared to fish the same run we just had produce big for us. What happened next, neither of us could believe. My indicator went for a dip and I set the hook. I knew it was a good fish. I told Nate to get us out of there and drop anchor. I knew it was another big fish. After a few tense minutes from behind my Pieroway 5 weight, we had another big Brown to the net. We taped him at a hair over 20 inches and just realized we had caught two 20 inch Browns from the same run less than a minute apart. We checked the pictures to make sure it wasn’t the same fish, and another round of high-fives ensued.

The rest of the day produced many more fish, but no more to the boat exceeding 20 inches. We were wondering if out twin Browns were going to hold up. We docked at Carseland and headed to the campground for a BBQ and a few cold beverages. Once the other guys arrived, we found out our fish were the two biggest of the day, and Gene produced the trophy he had graciously made and donated to the winning team. He made us promise to come back next year and defend the title, conditions we happily accepted.

Great friends, perfect day, spectacular fishing, and an amazing time had by all. A special thanks to Gene for setting this day up and all the hard work he put in to pull it off without a hitch.

Pieroway. Its a Passion.

I managed to get out today to photograph a few blanks for our archive. I headed down to a local park situated on the Bow River. The particular spot I had chosen had a few large rocks that were always well out of the water, but due to the amount of rain we have received, only a couple were showing. I chose one of the larger ones with a nice flat top and began photographing a few of the blanks a had with me. As I was finished with one, I would return to the bank, put it away, and grab another. In between one of the sets, I returned to my rock to find these two Stoneflies in a rather revealing scenario unfolding before me. Since I was there first, I didn't think they would mind me snapping a few shots of them in action. I laid the blank down and they actually crawled right over to it and held still for a brief moment. Please enjoy the photos as much as the participants.

We are thinking of making these into some sort of logo for a T-shirt. If you can think of a good slogan/catch-phrase to go with it; please visit us on Facebook and add it to the wall. Have some fun with it!

Pieroway & Safari Club International

Pieroway would like to introduce the custom rod that has been donated to the Calgary Chapter of Safari Club International for the 15th Annual Gala Fundraiser to be held Thursday June 10th 2010.

The rod was custom made with a solid Elk antler reel seat and burnt burl cork handle paired with a metallic copper IM8 graphite blank. These medium/fast action blanks allow for ease of casting and increased distance. Silver oversized SIC guides complete this rod. It was crafted in an eight weight, ideal for landing powerful fish like pike, salmon and bull trout.
Pieroway is proud of its partnership with SCI for this fundraiser. All that have seen this rod have commented on the craftsmanship and overall feel and appearance of this work of art.

A Day With A Legend

Pieroway Rod Company would like to take this time to thank Mr. Barry White for taking time out of his schedule to spend the day with us on the banks of the Bow River. Barry told stories, jokes and taught proper casting techniques to us, in order to help us become more knowledgeable and efficient using our own equipment. From picking up his first fly rod from the local hardware store, to being taught by Jim McLennan, to working with Lefty Kreh and Joan Wulff; the man has some amazing stories. Easily the most recognizable face on the Bow River, Barry's knowledge on the Bow River and flyfishing in general was invaluable to us today. Thank you Barry; our friend.

As a side note, of all the lessons we recieved today, James also learned that tying on a fly for casting lessons was not a good idea. Geoff learned to not walk behind James as he was trying to work out his tailing loops. Bobby learned to have the camera ready at all times for such occasions. On a good note, it was Jimmys best hook set of the day; and Barry showed us how to remove a #12 Blue-winged Olive from Geoffs finger.

Pieroway making an appearance in Paradise

This photo was sent to us by Butch Leone, good friend of Pieroway Rod Company. Butch is the owner/operator of Aitutaki Blue Lagoon Flyfish on the Island of Aitutaki, Cook Islands. His flyfishing operation targets trophy bonefish and trevally and Pieroway is proud to be an acquaintance. This might be the first Pieroway logo on a scooter, but probably not the last!! Way to go Butch!

Flyfishing Bootcamp, Sunday April 25th

ab     Pieroway Rod Company would like to invite you to join us for a Flyfishing Bootcamp we will be conducting on the Bow River this Sunday, April 25th. This is for anyone that wants to learn how to flyfish but considers themselves a beginner or novice. We will teach you tactics you can apply to flyfishing situations anywhere in the world. At Pieroway, we offer more than quality rods/reels at unbelievable prices. We offer a hands-on approach to flyfishing in markets that we operate. We do not sell you flyfishing equipment and push you out the door. We offer to show you how to use the equipment you purchase from us. We understand how overwhelming it can be to be a beginner to the sport of flyfishing and offer instruction and demonstration of our product we sell to you. We also understand experienced anglers are looking for performance out of a new fly rod. When you buy from us, you will not only own quality equipment, you will know how to use it. We will not make you feel uncomfortable in any way, no matter the question. We will not pressure you into a sale or sell you a rod/reel that does not suit your needs or fit you properly. Need a 9 foot 9 weight for Atlantic salmon? Or maybe a 6 weight for those big Bow Browns or a 4 for those West slope Cutties? We can hook you up; no pun intended. Have no idea what the difference between a 9 weight, a 6 weight and a 4 weight? That’s ok too. We can help. Wonder what a surgeons knot is? And why it’s needed to tie on tippet? Ask us. We can explain it and show you how. Our advice is one question away! From the beginner angler to the seasoned pro; we have a rod for you.

With professional instruction right at your side, you will be casting and ‘reading’ the water in no time! Learn how to properly handle your fish after the catch and how to safely unhook and release the fish back in the water, after a quick photograph of your trophy.

With personal instruction and all your equipment supplied, this one day bootcamp is all you need to master the art of flyfishing!

ONLY $25/person, sign up today! Spots available for this Sunday; more dates to follow! Contact us to join in!

Spey Discussion & Demo

This past week, Mike Bailey, Field Rep; Pieroway Rod Company, travelled to Edmonton for a Spey casting discussion and demo with the Northern Lights Fly Tyers club. Mike fielded questions in regards to Spey techniques for trout, choosing fly line and how to adapt and apply ones single-hand techniques to a double handed Spey rod. The weather cooperated and allowed Mike to demonstrate how to address and execute casting, as well as how to get the utmost performance from your Spey rod.

Mike would like to thank the Northern Lights club for the invitation and everyone that turned out for the meeting.

Wednesday: Wind and WireWorms

I'll admit it. I didn't want to go fishing this morning. I felt like I had just finished my night shift. Not only that, it was cold. It was windy. It had snowed. But I had the day off and Brad called to say he was on his way; so I got up.

After a short drive and a hot coffee we arrived at our spot on the Lower Bow. The wind picked up, and then some more as we hiked in to our hole. If the ducks and geese we jumped off the river were having trouble in the wind, casting may be a problem, but we were here now. After making a few changes in technique, we were forced to do kind of a modified roll-cast, but it seemed to work and soon we were fishing......and catching!

We battled the elements and stuck it out and ended up having an amazing day on the water. Several fish over 20 inches to the net and many more smaller ones made this one of the best days on the water so far in 2010. I told Brad we should go this morning!

Brad. I got the pic. Can you grab the net?
